Lindsay Booker, born 1991, Liverpool, England.

My work stems from my fascination with the physical and often immeasurable destruction of natural disasters. Hurricanes, tsunami's and tectonic movements which shape the global landscape are beautiful and powerful, however my awareness of these events is heightened through newsflash imagery portraying devastation, human suffering and loss.

 

My work is a continual interplay of the 'natural' world and the manmade, highlighting tensions between the two domains. I work initially in three-dimensions to create stage-set environments, where I explore and manipulate shapes and forms which translate to an altered and almost 'alien' landscape. Using images of disaster from the internet, I bring the media's portrail of disaster into my ink drawings.

 

I consider the physical and emotional response to disaster such as the sense of chaos, confusion and loss of recognition.

 

Recently I collaborated with Justine Lim and Joanna Baxter Wilson to form Sandbox, an art initiative which strives to bring the gaming world and art together. Sandbox exists to promote games as platforms for meaningful expression and to depart from the stereotypical assumptions games suffer from, such as commercialisation and the notion of "time-wasting". Sandbox considers the questions; do games need Art to legitimize the creative platform? and are games in fact more radical and exploratory of subjectivity, time, space and organisation, to such an extent that we could perhaps suggest the art world is out of step with an entire creative industry?
